Preliminary estimates of 2004 Gross Domestic Product of the State of Qatar

   

The Secretariat General of the Planning Council released the preliminary estimates of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the State of Qatar in 2004.

The preliminary estimates of (GDP) in 2004 was about (103 billions and 563 millions) (QR.), which is equivalent to US$ (28 billions and 451 millions), with annual growth rate of (20.5%) between 2003 and 2004.

The data as well showed that (GDP) in 2003 was about (85 billions and 918 millions) Qatari Riyals (QR.), compared to (71 billions and 733 millions) (QR.) in 2002, i.e. annual growth rate between these two years was about (19.8%).
Quarrying and mining (crude oil and natural gas) dominated the (GDP) in 2004, where it amounted to about (64 billions and 365 millions), i.e. its share of (GDP) was about (62.1%). This indicates that more than half of (GDP) is attributed to crude oil and natural gas exports. Its value was (50 billions and 551 millions) (QR.), i.e. its share in (GDP) was approximately (58.8%) of total (GDP).
It was followed by government services, where its value in 2004 was about (9 billions and 938 millions), i.e. (9.6%) of (GDP) in 2004. While in 2003 it was about (9 billions and 580 millions) (QR.), i.e. its share in (GDP) was (11.2%) in 2003.
The third economic activity in importance was finance, insurance, real estate and business services, where its value In 2004 was estimated to reach (6 billions and 910 millions) (QR.), i.e. (6.7%) of (GDP). While it was (6 billions and 276 millions) (QR.) in 2003, i.e. its share in (GDP) was (7.3%) in 2003.

The Secretary General of the Planning Council received, on Monday 6 December 2004, the Administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), New York. He was accompanied by the UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative, UAE, and Mr. Eltayeb Musa, Deputy Res. Rep.

The meeting was also attended, from the Planning Council, by Dr. Saleh Al-Nabit, Director, Economic Planning Department, and Dr. Yuhanna Aboona, Technical Cooperation Expert. Discussion centred around ongoing cooperation between UNDP and the Sate of Qatar and areas of possible development, including the proposed memorandum of understanding between the two sides that is to encompass future cooperation.

Manpower Planning in Qatar: Towards a Labour Market Model

   

Under the patronage of H.E. Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiya, Second Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy and Industry, Chairman of the Planning Council, the Planning Council is to hold a workshop on ÒManpower Planning in Qatar: Towards a Labour Market ModelÓ, during the period 11-12 October 2004, at the Marriott Hotel in Doha. The workshop is to be inaugurated by H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr Al-Thani, Secretary General of the Planning Council.

Participants in the workshop will include World Bank experts and consultants, representatives of government agencies and non-governmental organizations, and members of the national team charged with responsibility for the development and implementation of a project of the same title. The national team includes representatives of the Secretariat General of the Planning Council, Ministry of Civil Service and Housing, and Qatar Petroleum.

Workshop participants will discuss working papers prepared by the World Bank on the manpower planning project and its planning, implementation, follow-up and evaluation requirements, as well as a number of international and regional experiences in manpower planning.

The workshop agenda includes sessions in which specialist papers will be presented and discussed, and others in which working groups will draw up conclusions and recommendations to support the project and facilitate its implementation.
